As a SSAFA Mentor, Fiona helps veterans transition into civillian life

Fiona Wakefield

Fiona Wakefield is the SSAFA mentor for Army Veteran David Henderson as part of our mentor support scheme.

I feel privileged to be able to help someone with their transition to civilian life.

Fiona is a mental health nurse working in service improvement in the NHS for Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and has also been a SSAFA caseworker for 18 months.

Fiona said: “Both my parents were in the RAF and I was an Army cadet and then an Army Cadet Force instructor for 14 years so volunteering for SSAFA seemed an obvious step for me.

“David has been in the Army for eight years so the transition can be potentially quite difficult for him. At the moment we are just getting to know each other and building rapport and I’m not really offering advice or opinions, just listening or asking appropriate questions.

“Mainly we talk about what he is going to do now that he is out of the Army. He was a physical training instructor and is very much into fitness. He was a full corporal by the time he was 26 but he has trouble seeing how many of those skills can potentially be transferred into civilian life.
