Matthew loved his SSAFA short break for children with additional needs

Ten-year-old Matthew

Matthew was born with Down’s syndrome. Last year Matthew, now 10, attended SSAFA’s Short Break for children with an extra need or disability at the Calvert Trust in Exmoor.

His mum, Nadine, said “Matthew hadn’t really been away from home before but as it turns out he was absolutely fine. He had a great buddy assigned to look after him which worked really well!” Nadine and Warrant Officer Andrew, Matthew’s dad, stayed in a nearby cottage and were able to spend some time with their younger son, Tom, doing things that Matthew might not enjoy so much.

“It was such a grown-up thing for him to be able to do, something he could do by himself and it was great for his confidence. He was quite happy to take part in everything. He’s a very active little boy and he loved everything that they do there. It was heaven for him!”
