Derek spent 12 years in the RAF and was sent to the Falklands and Belize as part of his role with an Air Defence unit.

In 1996, he left the UK Forces and for the last 15 years Derek has volunteered for SSAFA. He is now a mentor supporting veterans in the community. ‘The role is flexible and fits around my work and family life. My service background enables me to speak with empathy and understanding. It is very worthwhile work,’ he explained.

Scott, one of Derek’s mentee’s, was severely injured when training with the army in Kenya. He now walks with a limp and is unable to run. He said: ‘Derek is always there to help me choose the right direction. Sometimes I struggle, but knowing I’ll see him in a couple of days means I know I’ll be fine.’
