To celebrate this year's St George's day in style, Selly Oak decided to throw a hugely special ball for all thier supporters to raise valuable funds for the house. Acting Manager Helen Gibson describes the night and all its surprises:
‘As guests arrived to the sounds of Shirley Brass Band, they were escorted by the Maritime Youth Group cadets to their reception drinks and an evening of wining, dining and dancing the night away and all in aid of raising essential funds for SSAFA Norton House.
There was a bottle tombola, guaranteed a 3 in 4 chance of winning an alcoholic bottle or 1 in 4 that it would be water! A silent auction, sat silently by with wondrous items to bid upon, a Tower of London poppy, a regimental bugle, a first edition Martina Cole signed copy of her latest release ‘Get Even’ or a family portrait taken in your home, to name but a few.
Revellers were then offered the opportunity to win a AllBarOne cocktail masterclass for 6 people, an astounding evening of fun was already underway, a superb starter of broth, was followed by Roast Dragon (beef), accompanied with wine, our raffle was drawn and then we began our live auction. A Tower of London Poppy, A Landrover experience, First class Virgin train tickets or a meal cooked in the comfort of your own home by 2 talented military chefs for 6 people.
As if all of this wasn’t enough a dessert of choux dragons & beverages was followed by world class entertainment with up and coming Keilah who entranced guests with her vocal range and Paul Shakespeare whose cabaret Las Vegas set had everyone dancing on the floor and in the aisles.
Over £3,500 was raised with more still to come, so until next time we hope you all had a fabulous St. Georges Day we certainly had a stupendous evening.’
