ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, on behalf of all the Regiments and Corps of the Army, has awarded a grant of £287,000 in July 2017 toward SSAFA’s Casework service and Forcesline during 2017.
SSAFA’s casework service provides welfare advice and support for the Armed Forces community. A network of 4,000 trained caseworker volunteers meet with potential beneficiaries to find out what help they need and offer support. This includes purchase of mobility aids and essential white goods and signposting to organisations which can offer specialist help to address problems.
In 2016, SSAFA casework volunteers visited and worked on cases with 38,978 beneficiaries, a 3% rise on the previous year. The needs of our beneficiaries are changing and becoming more complex, and as a result volunteer caseworkers are spending more time with beneficiaries to resolve their issues. The Soldiers’ Charity’s generous grant award will help fund the costs of training and supporting our volunteer caseworkers and ensure our beneficiaries receive the help they need.
SSAFA’s Forcesline is a free and confidential helpline for serving personnel, veterans, reserves and family members. Our team of trained welfare advisers offer emotional and practical help for everything from debt management and addiction to coping with family breakdown and depression. In the last year, enquiries to Forcesline increased by 16% on the previous year.
The Soldiers’ Charity’s support will ensure that Forcesline continues to offer a sympathetic listening ear to members of the Armed Forces community in need.
Making a difference to the quality of life of members of the Army family
Tegan Jones, Director of Fundraising at SSAFA, said: “This generous donation will allow SSAFA to continue delivering vital support to members of the Armed Forces community in need. Providing an evolving and robust system of support and guidance for our beneficiaries is our top priority. This grant will enable SSAFA to ensure that we are able to carry on adapting to the changing needs of soldiers, veterans and their families. We are grateful to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity for their assistance”.
Brigadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff ABF The Soldiers’ Charity added: “SSAFA caseworkers are imperative to soldiers and veterans who need a helping hand by providing much needed assistance and care to those in need. We recognise the valuable work that SSAFA undertakes and are very proud to support them.”
