As Chairman you will work with other volunteers and staff at our national office in London across a range of functions to ensure: the wellbeing of your team, the effectiveness of SSAFA’s support in your area and that your team has sufficient funds to carry out their work.
We’re looking for someone who is committed to providing the best possible support for our clients in their community and for finding the most effective ways to organise our services. This will involve giving guidance to your own network of volunteers and working with staff at our national office in London. Your responsibilities may also include reviewing financial matters, approving annual reports and appointing volunteers in your area into specialised roles. You will also oversee publicity and awareness raising activities to make sure that people in your area know about the work of SSAFA . Along with our local fundraisers you will also make sure that your team has enough funds to carry out its work.
Volunteering with SSAFA is special because you can see first hand the difference you make to people’s lives. This role is an opportunity for someone with energy and ideas to use their expertise to benefit their local community while also contributing to a nationwide network of volunteers.
You will need to be skilled at working with volunteers and others at all levels. The Chairman works with our national team in London, including our National Chairman, along with services and voluntary organisations in their local area. The success of the relationships you build in your community and more widely will mean that your team of volunteers have access to a greater range of support for clients. You will also need to build relationships with serving volunteers, often Armed Forces personnel, supporting those who are currently serving.
This rewarding role is an opportunity to offer your leadership expertise and local knowledge to benefit those in your community, as well as to learn new skills and meet some inspirational people.
The Chairman receives local induction training about SSAFA as well as personal briefings from the team at our national office in London. You will also receive training to understand how we assess the support our clients need and access this support.
You do not need a Forces background to volunteer with us. Most importantly, we are looking for volunteers who will listen sensitively and treat people with respect at all times. We also welcome people who have:
- Willingness to develop new skills and train for new things
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to work in a team and support others
- Ability to work within our Volunteer Policy and Code of Conduct
- Ability to work confidentially
- A driver’s licence (for some geographical areas).
